What the Heck is Going on?

Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

For the last several weeks, I have had nothing to say.

The sadness within me is so deep that I can't laugh right now.

Not even at Jimmy Kimmel or Jon Stewart.

I can't wrap my brain around the reasons that the country that I love and have always been thankful to be a part of is murdering people, forcing immigrants to leave their homes, and protecting men who raped, kidnapped, and allegedly killed children.

Children.

Not "underage women."

I try not to be political.

I've deleted numerous political rants because I desperately want this site to be a light-hearted refuge from the craziness that is life.

I will return to that norm, but I can't ignore this madness.

I wake up every day bracing myself for the latest atrocity.

As you know, our brains are wired to protect us from trauma. That's behavioral health. That's biology.

And they know that.

In fact, they count on it.

But what they didn't count on was the availability of information in the digital age.

We have access to history and science, even when they try to delete it.

So Americans are standing up and demonstrating that this is not who we are, and we can't stop.

Last night, my husband and I went on a date. We are simple blue-collar people, so pizza and a beer on a Friday night is our kind of date.

While he was ordering a drink, the bartender made a racist joke.

Like somehow it’s okay to make a racist joke when you’re an employee in a bar in a red state. As if we must be racist, based on our zip code.

We aren't.

And my husband made it clear that we aren't.

Everything is behavioral health, including how you respond to racist remarks from bartenders, friends, family, and your government officials.

Being from a red state does not mean you are racist.

Neither does being a Republican.

We all love our homes, our families, and our friends, and we want to do what is right.

I believe that.

It's time for all of us, no matter our political views, to illustrate by our behavior that love is stronger than hate.
