Attention Passengers...
Before you rush to fix your kid’s homework meltdown, your partner’s mood swing, or your boss’s latest “urgent” email, make sure you're taking care of yourself because being "happy" is not easy.
Ladies and gentlemen,
In the unlikely event that life goes sideways (and it will), an emotional oxygen mask will drop from the compartment above your head.
Please secure your own mask first before attempting to fix your teenager’s crisis, your partner’s mood, or your boss’s passive-aggressive emails.
Running out of oxygen while trying to save everyone else is not the flex you think it is.
Once your own mask is firmly in place —whether it’s by taking a breath, setting a boundary, or remembering that bubble baths are not a cure for generational trauma —you’ll have the energy to help the person beside you.
So sit back, relax, and remember: You are allowed to take care of yourself before saving the world.
In fact, it’s required.
Self-Care is Proactive
Answer these questions for yourself:
- How do you take care of yourself physically?
- How do you take care of yourself emotionally?
- What is your self-talk?
- What do you do for fun?
- Who do you talk to when you want to explode?
- How do you keep busy when you're alone?
- How do you maintain a healthy diet?
- What do you do when you don't feel well?
- Who do you hang out with when you are feeling "off"?
- Who makes you laugh?
- How do you maintain good sleep hygiene?
- How do you make your living environment cozy?
Self-care isn't just what you do when the plane is going down. It's what you do every day because being "happy" is frickin hard work.
